· EMAS, the eco-management and audit scheme for companies operating within the European Union, is promoting the adaptation of companies to methods that decrease environmental impact in production and commercialisation.

· The constitution of the Association is unique within the European Union area.

Day 6 of June the Association of EMAS-Registered Organisations was constituted, initially for some thirty companies, all with environmental registers awarded by the Department of the Environment and Housing. The constitution of this Association is unique within the European Union area and represents a new opportunity to make the environment, the economy and companies compatible.

From the very beginning, Catalonia has held a leading position within Spain in matters of EMAS registers. Within the European context, if we look at the number of registrations per million inhabitants, it has stayed in the first three positions, along with countries such as Germany, Austria and Sweden. For the moment, the chemical and tourist sectors are the leaders in Catalonia in obtaining this European EMAS environmental register.

Companies registered in the EMAS in Catalonia were becoming aware that they needed an instrument that represented them and could make their voice heard in the Administration and other social and economic collectives. Therefore, and with the support of the Department of the Environment and Housing, the new association will look for solutions to problems common to EMAS organisations, such as matters relating to public procurement and the integration of the EMAS in sectorial legislation.
